Give ’em a meter

Published: 26 November, 2010

• I DO find it shocking that people living in council properties are unable to control the amount and timing of the heat they use and to pay for it accordingly.

In my poorly insulated, privately owned Victorian house the heating goes off at 11.30pm and I have (to try!) to get myself to bed before it cools down. I couldn’t possibly afford to keep the heat on all night. I do have an electric blanket – not an expensive buy these days – that I can switch on for a few minutes during a very cold night.

If I were living in a council flat I would regard having to share the cost of other people’s heating as another form of taxation. Surely, it would be my right to be able to economise, both in terms of money and the environment?

When will it be possible to give every tenant their own meter and timer?
