Freedom... at a price
Published: 12 November, 2010
• WITH regard to the possible axing of the Freedom Pass – maybe the last bit of freedom the Eton-led government has been so hasty to cut, in an attempt to cure the country’s crisis – there may be a more humane way of saving money without stopping the pass entirely. There must be thousands of us “old uns” who never go out; or some who use the pass once a week.
Why not let those who want (and use) it pay a nominal charge for the annual pass. Then the pass would allow us to get a greatly reduced fare, each time we use it.
This scheme would bring in a lot of extra cash. Remember, us “old uns” have to get to hospitals – they are not fun rides.
Also, there are thousands of “ex-pats” sweltering in other countries who get paid a winter fuel allowance. Leave us “old uns” a little extra cash before we fade away.
