Barbican review evokes great memories of Merce
Published: 4th November, 2010
• I READ the review by Sam Jones about Merce Cunningham’s last ballet at the Barbican (Quality of Merce’s not strained, October 28) with great joy.
I studied with him a long time ago and knew him, John Cage, and most of his circle.
In fact I watched a rehearsal a week or so before Merce died and saw him there in his wheelchair.
I agree with you: “What an artist!”
Funnily enough when asked about abstraction, he told me years ago his work was not abstract!
His last piece was wonderful and with that structure and other elements – all integrated into a unified life of its own.
