Action on the Tube
Published: 11 November, 2010
• I COULD not help but feel a twinge of sympathy towards Bob Crow last Tuesday morning when I saw how much of the Tube network was running and how many stations were open.
As usual, on strike days I made a point of making as many journeys as possible by the Tube and noticed that London was slowly moving.
We seem to have reached the tipping point where the Tube was quite full. Londoners are ceasing to be threatened by the strike.
For years this silver tongued union leader has been able to bring London to a standstill with London Transport buckling to his demands. However, we now have the clash of Titans with Bob v Boris.
Boris is not going to buckle.
The reasons for the strike also mystify everyone. The recent runaway engineering train seems to be cited as a safety issue.
What on earth a coupling that failed has got to do with closing booking offices that are not selling tickets baffles most people.
Every strike seems to have less support with more stations opening. Union members must be wondering if it is worth losing a days pay each time when they achieve nothing.
Surely there has to be a point where their anger turns against Mr Crow for leading them up the garden path.
