Uncertainty

Published: 6 May, 2010

• THE radical reorganisation under the label Growing Your Library has had major repercussions for the library staff and quietly in the background they have had to endure months of uncertainty and stress.
This has culminated in an exercise to not only reduce the number of staff but to subject those left to a process of relocation.
Librarians have been interviewed for posts they already held and the “successful” candidates moved to different work locations. Although given a chance to state preferred locations and offered a right of appeal, many have been moved under duress.
Now it is the turn of the library assistants. They have received an email outlining a set of instructions to follow. They will be able to select a preferred library to be posted to and state factors affecting their choice by clicking numbered boxes. The click of a “voting button” will determine the future of their working lives.
Can it be that the recent election fever has spilled over to influence communications between management and staff?  I can only imagine that the resulting loss of morale will be detrimental to that service.
