Pavement pounding
Published: 21 May 2010
• IT recently came to my attention that the “green (cleaning) machine”, is causing extensive damage to our pavements and harassment to public and shopkeepers. It spews nasty diesel fumes into babies’ and children’s faces and is being driven in a manner that causes alarm, distress and annoyance to the public.
I have been told by a policeman that it contravenes the Road Traffic Act, which prohibits motorised vehicles from travelling along the footpath, unless it is an emergency vehicle, and I believe it can be seized under sections 59-60 of the Police Reform Act 2002 and is therefore breaking the law.
What is more, our beautiful, expensive York stone pavements are being ripped up and replaced with fabricated slabs that detract from the charm of Islington and Canonbury.
