Orwellian school cuts
Published: 14 May, 2010
• I WAS surprised to read that “Canonbury Primary School is looking to cut up to 30 posts in a drive to improve standards” (More primaries plan job cuts to save cash, May 7). As some of the 30 posts, of a total of 70 staff, are likely to be teachers, it implies that teaching and other school staff are an adverse factor when it comes to the educational standards achieved by children.
Is this an example of Newspeak/Doublethink, as first described by Canonbury-based author George Orwell in the book Nineteen Eighty-Four, where war-is-peace, freedom-is-slavery and ignorance-is-strength?
