My modest NHS proposal: voluntary euthanasia
Published: 7 May, 2010
• WITH the election over, it is time to recall the warnings that promises made to pensioners could all too easily be forgotten afterwards. All the more so, it could be argued, as the full impact of past squandering by Gordon Brown becomes apparent. Problems could be still further compounded if medical science further prolongs the age of the population.
But at least one crucially costly element in the NHS budget could be solved if politicians were prepared to do the unthinkable. Rather than forcibly keeping alive the aged who are longing for the relief of death – at least for those not rich enough or too feeble to take the one-way trip to Zurich – the NHS should offer a voluntary euthanasia service. In passing, I’d mention that I am in my eightieth year.
