Money to repair our crumbling primary schools is essential

Published: 27 May, 2010

• YOUR article (Schools in £200m cash cut fears, May 20) only referred to Camden’s secondary schools.
There is a much smaller sum of £20million promised by the previous Labour government for five primary schools in the borough.

Readers may recall the “decision” by the previous council (it was unclear who had actually made it) administration to postpone indefinitely the allocation of this funding to the five most needy primary schools in favour of building new schools in the more affluent parts of the borough.
However, the new regime is reported to have reversed this decision.

In many of the five schools  it is not just a matter of “refurbishment” but essential and substantial rebuilds before in some cases the buildings actually collapse.

It would be ironic if the new council agreed to return the funding to the five schools only for government to withdraw the funding altogether. Whatever happens it is essential that funding is provided to repair these crumbling schools.
