Freedom – from City
Published: 27 May, 2010
• SUNDAY May 23 seemed to be one of the hottest days this year and the Heath was packed with Londoners cooling off.
Away from the heat of buildings and sizzling hot paths, they picnicked, played, walked and swam.
Too hot to stay in our flat we, too, joined the exodus to the Heath.
For us, being able to walk on the Heath with our disabled son is only made possible by the use of the Hampstead Heath free buggy service. As users of the service, we are registered with the staff at the lido, allowing us easily to book the buggy when needed.
Our walk took us from the lido, to the top of Parliament Hill, down to the ponds, along the gravel pathway past the ladies’ pond, then crossing over back to the other side alongside the old cricket ground and pavilion, on down to the running track and back to the lido.
None of this would have been possible without the buggy service, which I hope the City of London continues to provide. This service gives our son the freedom to join in with others and enjoy London’s most unique heathland.
