Cyclists’ demands

Published: 7 May, 2010

• CYCLISTS will be interested to hear that Christian Wolmar, award-winning transport commentator, author  and local resident, will speak at the annual meeting of Islington Cyclists’ Action Group (ICAG) at the town hall in Upper Street from 7.30pm on Wednesday. There will be a question-and-answer session, refreshments and book signing.
 As the new Islington Council is formed, ICAG implores it to do more for cyclists by:
• Installing more cycle parking, including secure units at transport hubs, estates and commercial and residential areas;
• Repairing and improving road surfaces;
• Extending the 20mph speed limit to all streets;
• Removing local gyratories such as that at Hillmarton/
Caledonian roads; and
• Stopping further on-street car parking which restricts road space.
Whatever party forms the new government, the council should lead the way in making London a first-class city for cycling.
