Air quality strategy for the next five years
Published: 28 May, 2010
• I WOULD reassure Antony Porter (An air of complacency? Letters, May 21) that we take the issue of air quality extremely seriously.
Mr Porter raised concerns that a phone number to call the council about air quality was not included in Westminster City Council’s latest A-Z directory.
However, anyone who would like to raise this issue can phone our 24-hour environmental action line on 020 7641 2000, as included in the latest directory.
We will also be happy to consider changing our A-Z next year, so that air quality has its own entry.
By virtue of its central location and a million daily visitors, Westminster has some of the busiest streets in London, and we have long championed low emission zones as an effective method to improve air quality for our residents, businesses and visitors.
Westminster is currently reviewing its air quality strategy and action plan for the next five years, the first of its kind in the country.
We have already led the way in encouraging environmentally friendly travel with the installation of the greatest number of free on-street electric car recharging points in the UK, enabling drivers of electric cars, vans and scooters to charge their vehicles for free.
