Overnight rubbish
• THERE seems to be a lack of common sense at Islington’s Street Environment Services. Last week, we were informed of changes to our refuse collection service, saying that we should leave our rubbish and recycling out by 6.30am on the morning of collection. To comply with this, residents will have to put it out the night before.
Unfortunately, this will mean the plastic bags are torn open by foxes, rats and other scavenging animals, and decaying food scattered across pavements and roads, creating a health hazard for pedestrians.
In my street, we cannot put our bags in plastic bins as we do not have the space inside or outside our houses and flats to store them. The buildings are situated immediately on the pavement.
The same will be true of any food recycling containers left outside the night before.
A better solution for the environment would be to pick up refuse and recycling by 9am, enabling most residents to leave their refuse bags outside earlier that morning.
I understand that Kevin O’Leary, director of environment and regeneration, is paid £134,479. He should have thought of this beforehand.
