For cyclists

• SARAH Hayward complains about changes in Regent Square (Here to stay, March 11).
The reason that Regent Square is being made two-way is to facilitate the use of the cycle-path at its north west corner.
Currently, for cyclists arriving from the south west corner, the only way to reach the cycle path is either to cycle around three sides of the square, or walk one side. This type of pointless restriction does not encourage cycling.
I guess Camden Council decided that the easiest way to allow cyclists to use the roads in Regent Square in either direction was to allow this for all traffic. This change may increase the number of cyclists using Regent Square but is unlikely to cause an increase in any other traffic since the roads in the square don’t go anywhere.
This is an example of the measures needed if we are to increase the number of cyclists on the roads and to increase their safety.
Cyclists need access to more roads that don’t have left-turning lorries.
