Save City Guardians, curb ‘spin’
Published: 4 June 2010
• ONE of the first actions of the new government was to cut the amount of money spent on publicity and advertising, arguing that at a time of economic difficulties money should be spent on front-line services as a priority.
Yet Westminster Conservatives continue to spend more than £3million a year on the biggest council “spin” operation in London.
Surely, Westminster City Council should review this massive spending on its own propaganda?
Labour councillors and Karen Buck the Westminster North Labour MP have launched a petition to save the 66 City Guardians due to be sacked by the Conservatives.
The £2.1million cost of the City Guardians can be met by slashing the council’s “spin” budget by two-thirds.
What is more important, residents’ safety or council publicity?
