A push for fair wages
Published: 10 June, 2010
• I WAS delighted to read that the new Labour group at Camden Council is pushing for a fairer basic wage for hundreds of cleaners, catering staff and security guards across our borough (‘Morally important’ plan to raise wages of low-paid, June 3).
I was also very pleased to see Camden’s own Ed Miliband pushing the case for this nationally. As you pointed out in your editorial, this will need to be a careful balancing act, particularly given the pressures on the public purse in hardened economic times.
We should do everything we can to defend the lowest paid against cuts and dig our heels in against those who say it might be too difficult to achieve.
It’s the lowest paid who are most vulnerable in a downturn.
