Hangman and history

Published: 10 June, 2010

• I’VE just read your article on Albert Pierrepoint (Face of killer: Plaster casts of last hangman set to go up for sale, June 3) and noticed a couple of inaccuracies.

Pierrepoint was not Britain’s last hangman. He retired from the service around 1956 whereas execution by hanging continued until the mid 1960s; and he hanged Derek Bentley, not Bennett.
