Divine right of cyclists to flout law
Published: 10 June, 2010
• IT is, of course, regrettable that a young water bird was inadvertently killed by a cyclist racing on a towpath (Towpath cyclist kills gosling, June 3).
No real offence was committed; no cygnet belonging to Her Majesty the Queen was hurt.
What people should remember is that cyclists have been given a divine right to disregard all civilised road manners.
That this must be so is seen by the police tolerance of cyclists who are allowed to flout every aspect of the Highway (or pedestrian) Code.
Police do not warn cyclists disregarding red traffic lights or when making illegal turns into roads.
The police certainly respect the ecological preferences of cyclists terrorising elderly pedestrians, who slowly walk on the pavement. The cyclists race along on their bikes, and boast of their pollution-free mobility and strident defence of civil liberties in the nanny state, where Big Brother is always watching!
Returning to the unfortunate demise of the gosling, the offending cyclist made sure the bird would be humanely disposed of.
