Breath of fresh air?

Published: 25 June, 2010

• FIFTY years ago the smog and pea-soup pollution affecting London only came to an end through the Clean Air Act.

Today we face a problem just as big.

The tiny particles of today’s pollution contribute to heart attacks and strokes and an estimated 4,300 premature deaths each year in London.

It is time for bold measures like our parents and grandparents took.

Mayor Boris Johnson is now consulting on new policies to tackle air pollution.

Londoners should tell the mayor what is needed to clean up the capital’s air.

I am proposing a Liberal Democrat plan for a clean-air zone in central London.

This will get the oldest and most polluting vehicles off our roads, save lives and improve Londoners’ health.

If you share my concern for decisive action do take a look at the consultation which can be found at www.london.gov.uk

Please take part and urge the mayor to put Londoners’ health first.
