Bread and circuses

• WE hear a lot about the necessity of cuts to pay the nation’s debts.

So I am wondering about the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games in 2012.

The games are all about sport, so is there any reason to spend a fortune on fireworks and coloured lights?
