Apathy as water leaks
Published: 18 June, 2010
• IT was amusing to think that Boris Johnson might take an interest in a puddle on Highbury Fields (Pensioner asks Mayor to ‘fix’ leak, June 4). But what is the kernel of this story? Perhaps it the societal apathy that lets an apparent leak exist for so long before it was reported.
It is a shame Joe Hagland feels his non-emergency call was not dealt with helpfully, but the fact is the message did find its way through Thames Water’s bureaucracy and someone did respond.
I walk the same way to work and cross the same spot. It is a depression. A few inches from Mr Hagland’s right foot in the photograph is a slotted drain cover that does not take in water.
I have noticed a regular problem with the path-side drains on Highbury Fields. Either they are inadequate for the task or, more likely, they are clogged with fallen leaves and litter.
Islington’s Council’s chief executive, John Foster, is doggedly hanging on to his generous returning officer fee despite Highbury residents being excluded from voting. Now if he personally paid for a visit by Dyno-Rod, that would be a news story.
