Volunteers in the library

Published: 8 July, 2010

• IT is very clear consideration will be given to closing local libraries in Camden.

Volunteer resources could take over the burden of running much of the services provided in community libraries.

We are not talking about academic libraries which require complex cataloguing.

Buying locally or over the  internet would be cheaper because overheads would be removed.

I also suspect that many people would be happy to donate recently published books, once read, for the good of the community.

The council should think ahead rather than wait for someone to blame for closure.

Giving greater responsibility to those in the community who wish to have and develop local libraries is a way forward.
