Unkind cut

Published: 8 July, 2010

• YOUR reviewer enjoyed The Tempest at the Old Vic (July 1) but has no one noticed the censorship of one of Shakespeare’s most subversive speeches – Gonzalo’s in Act II?

It contains the words No occupation, all men idle, all; And women too All things in common nature should produce/Without sweat or endeavour.

It could be called a parody of Utopia or of subversion.

Until the Old Vic comes up with an explanation, I call this political censorship.
