Theft by moonlight

Published: 2 July, 2010

• AS a favour, my friend collected my 15-year-old daughter from a party on Saturday and brought her home at 11.30pm.

She parked in Highbury New Park for approximately two minutes to bring my daughter to my door.

She left her car on a double-yellow line spanning a car space outside Highbury estate and left on her headlamps.

As Islington’s finest parking enforcers issued a penalty notice, we were standing no farther than 15 metres away in full view of them.

There was no other traffic on the road and her car was not causing an obstruction, unlike the enforcers’ van, which parked in the bus lane in order to issue the ticket.

There was no warning, no request to move the car – just a stealthy approach in the dead of night.

Sensible parking policy or theft by moonlight?
