Little excitement dealing with mental illness?
Published: 2 July, 2010
• I WAS so surprised by your theatre critic’s review of Through a Glass Darkly at the Almeida Theatre that I wonder whether we saw the same production (Affluent family shattered by mental illness, Review June 25)
The subject matter is difficult but I would have thought a seasoned theatre critic could take it in his stride.
But boring?
It’s difficult to believe that he found Karin inarticulate, and that he could be so obtuse as to not care much about her plight.
I wonder what sort of “more exciting treatment” of the subject of mental illness it would take to perk your critic up? Quite apart from the subject matter, Mr Loeb’s conclusion that Ruth Wilson “fails to deliver a believable performance” defies common sense, it seems to me, as well as just about every other critic.
