Daft name
Published: 29 July, 2010
• THE report (Are you ready to take the plunge? July 22) rightly identifies the Prince of Wales baths as a local landmark event.
Why then are local people muttering “Where is the new sports centre?”
The remarkable phenomenon of three refurbished swimming baths is such a stunning achievement for a local authority, yet the council has renamed it as if it were but a part of nondescript recreational chain.
In national terms the reopened baths are exceptional.
The daft rebranding that has no public endorsement or authorisation should be reversed now.
Already it confuses visitors who have the Talacre Community Sports Centre, a mere stone’s throw down the road.
Prince of Wales Baths is a historic name good enough for the people of Camden and elsewhere.
The swimming bit is why it is distinguished.
Anything else is purely incidental and inconsequential by contrast.
