Architectural gems deserve preserving, not vandalising

Published: 16 July, 2010

• THIS week, we heard that a planning application to build a huge, ugly additional storey on top of our homes at Northview in Holloway was withdrawn.

Many thanks to the Tribune for highlighting the value of our unique estate, and to architect James Dunnett, whose support as a modern architecture expert was invaluable in resisting this application.

We were hoping that this would be the end of attempts at architectural vandalism at Northview.

However, we are remaining vigilant as we understand another planning application is in the wings.

Northview’s design was typical of its time, but we believe it is the sole survivor of its kind in Islington.

It is nearly intact and has a number of original features and deco designs.

The ghastly proposal would have wrecked its character.

Sadly, Holloway’s unique and eclectic mix of architectural styles – including our 1930s corner here – can be particularly vulnerable to overdevelopment.

Local architectural gems should be preserved, not vandalised in the name of profit.
