Value of voluntary groups
• FOR many years we have generously supported the voluntary sector, enabling many organisations to provide a great range of services to Westminster’s residents (Voluntary groups hit by big cuts, January 15).
We place great value on voluntary groups and all of those who work so selflessly to make a real difference to people across the city.
This year, however, we received applications for funding from more than 200 voluntary groups seeking a total amount of £9,299,592 in funding, almost triple the budget we had available.
There are many worthy causes in Westminster but as a council we have to balance this with our responsibility to act prudently with the public purse and as a result were not able to fund every application we received.
We, and the entire country, are facing a new tough financial climate.
Like many councils, we are facing a series of unprecedented financial challenges with cuts in central government grants and reduced income from services.
Despite facing serious financial pressures, we are still in a strong position and are well placed to meet these challenges, but that means we all have to make tough choices.
We recognise that the voluntary sector are the unsung heroes of Westminster and that they deliver a huge range of vital services but it is vital that we live within our means.
We appreciate that some organisations may be disappointed that they have not got everything they asked for, but we have ensured that all applications were judged fairly, to make sure limited funds are put to the best use across the city to deliver the best possible results for our residents.
If any voluntary group in Westminster would like to discuss this year’s grant allocations or would like more information about future grants please contact Sherifah Scott on 020 7641 8954 or email sscott@ westminster.gov.uk.
