Research lab will be of benefit

• I SYMPATHISE with A McCarthy (Letters, January 7), the building of the research centre at King’s Cross will be a great inconvenience, and views will be lost all around when the new building is finished.
But if you live in a major city developments are inevitable, especially if you live in such a central area as NW1.
However, even the “leafy NW3” McCarthy refers to is not immune!
Alongside our flat we had a single-storey building which became vacant and, despite efforts to prevent it or at least moderate its size, we now look at the backside of a school as high as our whole house and taking not just a view, but plunging us into darkness much of the year.
And it isn’t even a local school, but one for only rich people’s kids, with all the gas-guzzler traffic problems these apparently legless kids generate.
At least we should all benefit from the work at the research centre, if that is any consolation for your correspondent. Here all we have is arrogance and privilege, another set of toffs and Tories.
