Never mind the quality
• THE insidious message of the internet “Never mind the quality, feel the speed” now seems to be dominating television – linear is out, fragmentation is in.
One recent exception was a relaxed Alan Bennett, not walking about (like Andrew Marr and Simon Schama) but chatting to the camera as to an old friend, which was a joy.
As to drama, original screenplays are out; adaptations are in, messing with the Masters as in the travesty of The Turn of the Screw. No wonder many oldies like myself are going back to Radio 4.
