Maiden Lane fights on
• SEVERAL months ago the council made the disastrous decision to cut funding to Maiden Lane Youth Club.
Following huge public outcry across Camden they later introduced a stop-gap “solution” of temporary funding which is about to run out. It was clearly hoped that by the time this funding came to an end public outcry would have died right down.
But we absolutely must continue the fight to reinstate the funding.
We must show them that they cannot get away with a decision that damages the lives of so many young people.
Put simply, we will not forget about it as they hope.
As well as being a betrayal of the tireless work of Maiden Lane Community Centre, cutting the funding is also incredibly short-sighted. As a teacher it is clear to me how important it is to keep young people engaged at all times including outside of school.
The cuts will therefore impose serious long-term social costs not only in the immediate area of the brilliant Maiden Lane Youth Club but all across Camden, damaging the lives of individuals and communities.
If the Liberal Democrat council is serious about making Camden safer and supporting residents they will reverse their disgraceful decision. And not with another stop gap solution but for good. This is the last chance to do so before the temporary funding runs out and the real damage begins.
