Hospitals with history
YOUR article (St Luke’s the latest casualty, January 21) may have given the impression that the hospital building under alleged threat in Muswell Hill was designed by Sir John Soane in 1751.
The original St Luke’s Hospital in Moorfields was founded in 1750 with a new, larger, hospital built in the 1780s to a design by George Dance, though Soane did submit designs and assisted Dance. The hospital moved to Muswell Hill in the last century. This and others are covered in my course London’s Hospital History at Mary Ward Centre from June 10.
