Greater love hath...

• THE “elephantine memory” John Gulliver claims for himself (The long knives are out as duo go backstabbing, January 7) is not up to the standard usually boasted on behalf of pachyderms.
Jeremy Thorpe’s remark after Harold Macmillan’s “night of the long knives” was: “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his friends for his life.”
Much wittier than Gulliver’s reference to “kicking his best friends when they’re down” which does not work at all.
Though not working  at all does seem to be a characteristic of the Labour coups Gulliver was writing about.
