Duty of care includes that of gritting the pavements
• I WAS somewhat confused by Liberal Democrat councillor Paul Braithwaite’s letter (Priorities, January 14) about the failure of his council to grit the pavements.
He said: “We need to change the priority in Camden from cars to pedestrians.”
Is he not a member of the ruling coalition in the council and thus one of the people who should be forcing this change, not writing letters about it? Does he not understand that the council has a duty of care to its residents, and have let people down, who pay for a service that never came?
With more snow on the way, let’s just see how Cllr Braithwaite can bring about the change he suggested.
In Gospel Oak ward, as presumably in Cantelowes ward, there was a total failure to look to the needs of pedestrians. The Tory leader Andrew Marshall expected citizens to spread the grit provided by the council themselves. So far as I am aware there is only one very small grit box in Gospel Oak, which remained empty for almost all of the icy period.
This clearly reflects the attitude of our two ruling parties.
The Lib Dems: somebody else is in charge and they must change.
The Tories: self-help but we are unable to give you the resources to enable this.
