Why secret payments?

Published: 11 February 2010

• IN response to your article (The £1m secret payments made to council staff, February 4) I was shocked to hear about the lack of transparency when it comes to council bonuses.

As a qualified teacher I am not particularly familiar with the range of possible procedures for awarding bonuses, as they do not exist in the same way as they do in other professions.

But surely they should never be on a secret basis.

We all want to ensure that Camden Council staff are the best, and I understand that payments could potentially play a role in this, particularly slowing down the turnover of staff.

However, the council needs to be much more open about this.

We need much more transparency in the future.
