Violence is the fear

• THE proposed fan zone for Regent’s Park during the World Cup concerns us greatly, particularly the potential for alcohol-fuelled violence spilling out into nearby neighbourhoods.
The organisers cannot possibly guarantee residents that there will be no excessive alcohol consumption, especially as the event is being “self-funded” through the sponsorship of a beer company.
Another concern is that the GLA expects Camden police to control these events, diverting police resources. The intensive use of Camden police will mean that there will be fewer police available in all other parts of the borough not only during the time of the matches but for hours, if not days, before and after.
If the police spend additional resources on overtime, then they will have to make budget cuts elsewhere, affecting the community safety of every resident and business.
In a word, the organisers are asking those of us who live in Camden to pay for the consequences of this drinks-subsidised event.
If the GLA is so keen, then it must take the necessary steps, and assume the necessary costs, of making it a safe one.
