Tribute to a poet and anarchist

• I WOULD like to add my sadness at the death of John Rety.

I first met John in 1962 at the Freedom Bookshop in Fulham.

I was then interested in the anarchist movement and it was people like John who helped me come to grips with Proudhon and Bakunin.

We lost touch for several years and it was through my friendship with the late John Heath-Stubbs that I met John again. He still had a passion for literature but was also now promoting a wide range of British poetry.

His small publishing press, Hearing Eye, was run from his poetry workshop in Tufnell Park. From there he published many titles of poetry some by established poets but many others by new poets searching to have their voice heard.

His kind and supportive personality will be missed. As will his dedication to and promotion of British poetry.
