School now a revelation

Published: 19 February 2010

• AS a governor at Holloway School, I had the privilege last week of being taken on a guided tour of the new building and facilities at the school – and I have to say I have never seen such a modern, well-equipped learning environment.

Holloway now has a music room with 25 new Mac computers; a refurbished Arsenal study centre; bigger, lighter classrooms; new tables and chairs throughout; a new and improved library; much more space in corridors; plentiful toilets and water fountains; four stunning IT suites; a genuinely artistic drama studio; and larger, better-equipped maths, English and science classrooms.

Moreover, the structural transition between the new buildings and old is seamless – the architects have bridged the school’s long history in our community with a confidence for the future.

Teachers at the school told me that the new building has instilled a new respect for the learning environment among students, and a new pride in the school they attend.

The teachers, too, are delighted with the work that’s been done.

Holloway is the first school in Islington to have its phase one Building Schools for the Future investment work completed – that’s £19million of Labour government money impeccably spent on the education of local young people.

I would also like to congratulate Bob Hamlyn, headteacher at Holloway School, for the excellent work he and his staff have done in overseeing the building of and transition to the new facilities, while simultaneously improving the results of Holloway’s students.
