Poem for John Rety

Susan’s role

• YOUR obituary for John Rety (February 11) is interesting and informative.

I should like to draw attention to the important role of John’s partner Susan Johns, both in the running of the Torriano Meeting House and Hearing Eye. This small press has published many well-received poetry books and pamphlets with Susan as its excellent editor. John was proud of this fact and always wanted it known.

He was also proud of their daughter Emily Johns, an artist who designed the attractive covers of a number of Hearing Eye publications. Emily Johns edits Peace News as well as being an artist.

John’s grandfather was an impresario and founder of the first theatrical agency in Hungary. John’s father took the agency over.

He took an interest in English drama, especially Noel Coward and had connections with the BBC. These helped to obtain John’s visa to come to London aged 17.
