Doughty fighters

• IT was sad and poignant that the deaths of Harriet Garland and Avis Hutt should be reported in the same week (New Journal, January 28).
I write on behalf of Age Concern Camden to pay tribute to Harriet and Avis.
Both women were doughty fighters for people’s rights but they were warm and practical too.
Both were members of ACC.
Harriet Garland was a key figure in voluntary organisations in the borough like Mind in Camden, and made promoting positive mental health the theme of her year as the mayor of Camden in 2004-2005.
As the council’s older people’s champion she has left an enduring legacy – the cross-party commitment to preventive services like befriending, lunch clubs and advice.
Such services and Camden’s commitment to involving older people have since won plaudits from the government and Audit Commission.
Avis Hutt too was a determined local campaigner, tutor and researcher working for older people in Camden and far beyond.
Over many years Avis Hutt was a “hands-on” volunteer for Age Concern Camden and served as the vice-chair of the organisation.
She was closely involved with many other local older people’s organisations, Primrose Hill Neighbours Help to name but one.
