Bite out of playground

Published: 19 February 2010

• WHY is Councillor George Allan so proud that a school has been forced to sell its playground to fund improvements (Anger over playground ‘vandalism’, February 5)? Building on green space in Clerkenwell, however neglected or underused, is contrary to Islington Council’s own policy. Eating into valuable school grounds in densely populated areas should also be contrary to policy. Clerkenwell is cited as suffering high levels of obesity among primary school children.

It seems Lib Dems are happy to go against their own policy and the advice of the council’s conservation officers, English Heritage and the Twentieth Century Society. I’m sure refurbishment of the school was popular as it was much needed, but at what price to the future?
