Is this really for remembrance?

Published: 17 December, 2010

• SO the Bomber Command Association think that planting 25 semi-mature trees will mitigate the felling of the nine mature trees in the Green Park.

This tactic is often used by developers when they wish to get rid of old trees that stand in their way.

They will also be planting a yew tree from Germany in response to comments of the memorial’s inappropriateness by people in Dresden and Coventry. But this memorial and exaggerated tree-planting does not preserve the ancient park landscape designed by John Nash in 1820 and does not protect our public natural open space.

The Green Park was laid out and planted to resemble the rolling English countryside, hence there are no formal flower beds or structures in the design.

Nash used the bank and hedge at the boundary to block out the built environment so as to give the illusion to the horizon that the park was much larger.

As we keep saying, there is no reason for this huge memorial to be built here when other more suitable sites exist.

I am afraid to say, that this whole project stinks.

All the way up it stinks of nods and winks to an emotive cause.

The weakness and misguidedness of those in authority is astounding; kow-towing, “We’d better not object, we must support our armed forces”, during these times of massive propaganda. And guess what now?

We hear a rumour that before the year is out a meeting will take place to give the nod and a wink to another large memorial in the Green Park.

Is this truly remembrance that they are pursuing?

It doesn’t look like it to me.

Please sign the petition to, at best, relocate this memorial.  http://www.gopetition.com/petition/40898.html
