Much pain

Published: 16 December, 2010

• THE extraordinary cuts proposed to Camden play services are, lest we forget, of around 80 per cent when the “pain” being handed down from central government is 26 per cent.

The reductions are neither inevitable nor acceptable. This particular cut will punish low-income working parents with government reforms to welfare.

The level of cut will make it impossible for accessible, affordable, play provision to survive at all by innovating: it seems that play must be either entirely dependent on council funding or not happen at all.

Council cabinet members must look at the borough and ask whether they would call these cuts progressive, while bemoaning their future impact. We need wisdom and responsibility as spending is trimmed.

Is this 80 per cent justifiable?
