Few oppose the superlab
Published: 30th December, 2010
• YOUR report (£660m superlab gets go-ahead, December 23) omits to mention several speeches in support of the application, including myself as ward councillor, and the hugely respected local community leader, former mayor, Barbara Hughes.
I suggest readers log on to Camden’s website where they can watch the various presentations and the vote for themselves. Similarly, the written reports to the committee (also on the website) included support from, for example, our most respected local NHS hospitals, and numerous leading scientists, medics and researchers – none against.
Despite three years of campaigning only 33 letters of opposition were sent to Camden from the local area in response to over 700 notifications.
More were from around the UK and overseas, likely based on misinformation and scaremongering on numerous “anti-” websites.
I appeal to genuine local objectors, now the decision has been made, where it should be, by Camden’s development control committee, to work with supporters and the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation to make sure the benefits materialise.
This includes the £10 million section 106 offer, the living centre, local jobs, skills, and education, and contributions to housing.
Taking the “fight” to the London mayor or select committee is pointless and will achieve nothing for the community of St Pancras and Somers Town.
Cllr Peter Brayshaw
Labour, St Pancras & Somers Town ward
