Taking care with money
Published: 06 August 2010
WE have an excellent track record of delivering more for less and looking after residents’ hard-earned cash (Hundreds more council staff are facing the sack, July 23).
This is not just our view but was confirmed earlier this year by the Audit Commission who praised the council for its careful handling of taxpayers’ money and its determination to keep costs down for local residents and businesses.
The council was also praised for managing its finances and resources, giving it one of the best overall scores in the country.
In terms of the wider picture, clearly the economy is in a very difficult position and while there will have to be some sacrifices, whatever happens we will ensure that the most vulnerable in our society are protected, and those in most urgent need of help will continue to get it.
On the issue of council tax, the only complaints about low council tax seem to come from Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg.
The idea that residents would want a £40 rise in their council tax bills cannot be taken seriously. Nor is it a sensible or realistic way to fund council services.
At Westminster we have been keeping council tax low for years and we are proud of it. We are also aiming to freeze council tax for the next three years to help people through the current financial climate.
Indeed, I am yet to receive a single request from residents asking for an increase in their council tax, but I wait in anticipation.

Leader, Westminster City Council
