Super lab danger
Published: 19 August, 2010
• AS a resident of Somers Town who understands the need for research laboratories I am, however, dismayed by UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation’s decision to build a massive lab researching dangerous diseases north of the British Library and next to St Pancras station.
The lab is not being built for the residents of Somers Town, it is being built for research that can be done elsewhere.
We have been assured that there is no danger from a lab like this and that the people working in it are highly trained. The fact is that human error can happen anywhere, however good the experts are.
If contamination were to seep into the water table under the site it could poison water supplies used for schools, a hospital, the British Library,
St Pancras International and thousands of buildings where people either live or work.
It could affect the Underground and the thousands of people who travel to King’s Cross and St Pancras every day.
Somers Town needs housing, facilities and green space to alleviate the overcrowding and hence suffering that some people and children endure in this area.
