• IF this government wants to save millions of pounds (Chancellor could start by taxing non-essentials, August 12) it should focus on scrapping at least 44 government quangos and payments to the European Union.

It should abolish bodies such as Sport England and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Also scrap translation services for migrants and remove questions on forms asking for a person’s ethnicity.
