Let tenants have a say

Published: 27 August, 2010

• WHAT makes the sorry tale of self interest triumphing over morals and due diligence at a time when swingeing cuts make it even less acceptable (Tenants in row over expenses for HfI meetings, August 13)) is the fact that they have failed to put this before the consultative panels and allow elected representatives a vote on this decision.

Three years ago this same proposal was made to the panels, which voted resoundingly No.

Rather than risk democracy, this deal has been made behind closed doors.

I urge Labour to insist this issue be reviewed and to allow residents at panel level to vote on whether they think these directors should receive this money on top of other expenses.

Once this starts, will they keep voting themselves pay rises in secret too?

I have not done my sums yet on the total cost of the package of benefits the resident directors will be paid, but it is certainly way above anything received by other resident representatives who spend hours of voluntary time supporting estates and who more often than not claim nothing.

The only time I have seen a resident director at a panel was three years ago when they wanted us to vote on whether they got paid.

To fail to consult us again further supports my perception that the resident directors’ real concern is simply themselves.

For that alone I hope they are all voted off the board.

I suggest we put forward a motion demanding a re-election of the board of Homes for Islington, and I urge Labour to bring services back under council control to end this costly and unnecessary subcontracting of council services.
