Let drivers obey rules
Published: 20 August, 2010
• CAMPAIGNERS against the effective and cost-efficient camera in Riversdale Road, Highbury, will be well aware that residents pressed for many years for measures to deter heavy vehicles and to encourage courteous driving (Top solicitor to take on scourge of CCTV cameras, July 30).
The council has responded with speed humps to discourage speeding and a width restriction, monitored by a camera, to deter heavy vehicles while continuing to give access to private cars.
I visited the camera site to check the signage, which is very clear. Islington Council should be robust in its defence. Drivers “bewildered” by the layout and “fed up” receiving fines should consider changing their driving habits and stick to the rules.
Given the harsh cuts facing the council, it seems extraordinary to see a letter calling for the removal of a safety measure that pays its way.
