A betrayal by ‘democratic’ Liberals and Tories
Published: 19 August, 2010
• I HOPE the Liberal Democrats on Camden Council, usually talking glibly of democratic rights etc, will be looking askance at their Tory partners on the council and in national government and at their own national leadership.
Daily we are seeing the government smashing all that has been built up over the past 60 years by Labour to create a welfare state and eradicate the dreadful evils of life that existed in this country.
Examples?
The end of the National Health Service with the end of primary care trusts and GPs running the NHS (itself a farce) etc; the proposal that council tenancies could end after five or 10 years if one happens to earn a decent salary; the end of anti-social behaviour orders, which, whatever the Liberals and Tories say, has had an effect on many feral people causing hell in our streets and estates; the cutting back of magistrates’ courts to make it even more difficult to control anti-social behaviour and crime; the suggested inviting local residents to accompany police in dealing with problems in streets and estates – even if they are not fully trained (encouraging vigilante groups perhaps?); the end of the National Film Council, which has worked so hard to enhance and encourage the British film industry and jobs and creativity; the mess up by Michael Gove over the future of schools and financial help; and so it goes on.
Well done, Lib Dems, you have shown what you really are and by seeking power at national level have sought power at all costs and to hell with principles and the rights of people.
May you live with your consciences.
The tremendous work of Labour governments, which brought in council housing 90 years ago; the welfare state and the NHS in 1945 and all the great work by subsequent Labour governments is being destroyed by Nick Clegg and David Cameron; and those of us who have fought for 50 years to create a better society and those who ourselves have lived in slum poverty, feel we have all been betrayed by so-called democratic Liberals and their Tory friends.
